Tips for Freshman/New Terry Scholars from Experienced Terry Scholars

Who better to get advice from about college than people who've got a year or more of college under their belts? There's advice below from multiple Terry Scholars that should be helpful.

Don't leave clothes unattended because I had things stolen from the laundry room in the dorm. -Laura Morales (2015 Scholar)

Do your laundry on Saturdays or in the mornings so you don't have to wait for machines. Rent textbooks, and DO NOT buy from the SHSU bookstore. They've been rude in the past and charge a ridiculous amount. -Yanci Yeater (2015 Scholar)

Don't bring too much when you move into the dorm. Moving in is a lot easier than moving out. Also, don't wait until you have no clean clothes left to do laundry. You'll regret it when you can't find a washer. -Emily Bowman (2015 Scholar)

I think the 15 meal a week plan is the best way to eat on campus. Use bigwords.com to compare textbook prices. Join at least two organizations, it's a great way to network. Go to the Rec Center. Terry is paying for it, so go at least once a week. It's a good way to destress. Use other on campus resources to your advantage. Invest in a mattress protector and do a quick check for bedbugs. -Peiting Liu (2015 Scholar)

Sleep is bae. The nights you think you can stay up til 6 am playing video games, don't. Just go to sleep. -Charlie Herrera (2015 Scholar)

Always schedule time to eat and be active, even if it's just a 15 minute healthy snack and a walk. It's really important to take care of yourself. -Naomi Hall (2014 Scholar)

Be social! Don't just sit in your dorm room. Join a club, make friends, and just go out and do things with other people. -Will Burson (2014 Scholar)

The Terry Scholars (old and new) are your friends and make great study buddies! Don't wait until the last minute to return rental textbooks because the lines will be horrendous. Don't worry about half the stuff you're currently worrying about. You'll find that college is just the right amount of fun and work if you manage your time well. Most importantly, have fun! People say high school was the best years of your life, but they're wrong. College is the bomb. -Mariah Tarkington (2015 Scholar)

Schedule your time wisely. Make sure you have time to eat, sleep, relax, study, go to class, and have fun! The library is an awesome place to study! Terry Scholars are friendly, so don't be afraid to stop and say hi when you see someone! Join organizations and get involved! Don't stress too much! Have so much fun! -Emily Urbin (2015 Scholar)

Don't be afraid to say no to things if you don't have the time for it, if you're overwhelmed, or just don't want to! Come to Terry functions because it's a great way to meet your fellow Terry Scholars, and you're likely to run into Terry Scholars all over campus. Make sure you have time to eat! -Kirsten Cottle (2014 Terry Scholar)
